Reset Windows Update components

Today I was getting some issues installing 7 or 8 WIndows Updates on a client PC – it had done the previous few but was stuck on these last few – I rebooted a few times and also ran A MS FixIt tool to no avail,, I came across these steps to reset Windows Update Components and it fixed my issue:

Please try to manually reset the Windows Updates Components and check if that helps fix the issue.

Start in an Elevated command prompt
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Exit in the Command Prompt

Not sure if this wiped out the remaining 8 updates or not but at least it continued to work against the WSUS server now.   Maybe more prudent to note down each ‘pending’ update and see if they are required or if they are later skipped anyway.
