Using RUNAS for Control Panel-type applets
This is my site Written by Grant on March 25, 2011 – 11:16 pm

Often when I am admining a user’s PC after hours I need to run either the System or Computer Properties applets but the user I am logged in as is not a local admin – while I could logout  and log back in as a domain admin it sometimes confuses the user the next day when they come in and find their username isn’t in the “Username” field where they expect it to be — invaribly they don’t even know thier own username :)

Generally you can’t perform a regular right-click “RUNAS” operation on special items like Control Panel applets or the Computer Properties dialog. In these situations you can use a variation on the RUNAS command that will fire off the applet using the RUNAS functionality.

Here is the basic command for firing off COMPUTER PROPERTIES using RUNAS style:

runas /user:domain\DomainAdminUser
     "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL sysdm.cpl"

The list below lists the common ones I use – lots more can be found here:

Appwiz.cpl     Add/Remove Programs properties
Inetcpl.cpl    Internet properties
Netcpl.cpl     Network properties
Sysdm.cpl      System properties (eg right-click MY COMPUTER|Properties)

The other interesting one I sometimes need is COMPUTER MANAGER:

runas /user:domain\DomainAdminUser "mmc %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc"
