Setting SNTP time source

Now that NET TIME /SETSNTP and /QUERYSNTP have nbeen deprecated, newer versions of Windows require complicated w32tm.exe configuration.

If you have one particular machine that you need to reference a SNTP server the easiest way is to modify it’s registry.

This key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters

Set the TYPE : NTP
Set the NtpServer :,0x9

Restart w32time service and you are done – verify in Computer Manager event logs for SYSTEM — it should show confirmation such as:

The time provider NtpClient is currently receiving valid time data from,0x9 (ntp.m|0x9|>  and
The time service is now synchronizing the system time with the time source,0x9 (ntp.m|0x9|>
